Reflecting on Recent Features: Our Work in The New York Times and The Plan Magazine

We are taking a moment to reflect on two recent features in The New York Times and The Plan Magazine that highlight our ongoing architectural work at the Goldstein Estate. It is gratifying to see our work showcased in such respected publications, and we appreciate the recognition it brings to our firm and the project’s importance as both a cultural and architectural mainstay of Los Angeles.

The articles provide insight into the famous property, owned by James Goldstein, which has been a significant and years-long endeavor for our team. Each piece uniquely captures the collaborative efforts between our firm and Mr. Goldstein: from the initial conception to the resulting intricate design details required to realize the most recent project, the Goldstein Entertainment Complex.

There has been a long history of work on the property that starts with the original conception of the main residence by Lautner to the many years of renovation. The work never ceased, even after Lautner died, carried on by his associate Duncan Nicholson until 2015, and now our firm. The original Lautner master plan (including the concept for a tennis court and guest house) laid the foundations for the ever-evolving project; we continue working with owner James Goldstein to achieve his vision. The recent publication in The Plan highlights the overall story and provides graphic plans, sections, and details that have never been released to the public before.

As architects, witnessing our designs manifest in such a distinctive and well-known project is deeply fulfilling.  John Lautner's Sheats-Goldstein Residence represents a pinnacle of Organic Architecture, a fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces, both futuristic and ancient, solid and weightless. Through our work to preserve and maintain this storied home (as well as some of his other significant buildings) we have grown intimately familiar with Lautner’s unique approach to design and the ways in which his philosophy manifests in seemingly effortless details and dramatic structures.  Our design methodology is a reflection of this innovative approach that we seek to bring to all of our architectural endeavors.

We value the opportunity these publications have given us to share our work with a broader audience. The future planned Goldstein projects, including the Theater and Guest House, will continue to unfold in the years to come. For us every project represents an opportunity to create a distinct, thoughtful design derived from the many variables of the project and site that elicit a unique architectural solution. We remain committed to pushing boundaries and creating spaces that inspire.
